A Look at Greek Yogurt and Sugar


Many people are concerned about their daily sugar intake for many health related issues. The biggest health issue today appears to be diabetes. Unfortunately for Greek yogurt lovers who are watching their sugar levels, there are not sugar free Greek yogurt products on the market. That is because Greek yogurt is made from milk. Milk naturally contains lactose, which is a natural sugar. While the straining process involved in making Greek yogurt takes out some of the lactose, it is still present in Greek yogurt. Greek yogurt will tend to have less sugar than regular yogurt because it is strained more, thus removing more lactose or sugar.

Since sugar free Greek yogurt is not available, we have sought out low sugar Greek yogurt options. We define low sugar as being 10 grams or less per single-serve (5.3 ounce) container. We found that almost all brands that we reviewed had some sort of low sugar product available. As flavor like fruit or nuts are added the sugar amount tends to increase significantly. There are many options available for low sugar Greek yogurt; however the excitement factor with flavors is next to zero. Most people tend to add their own fruit when eating plain yogurt. Fruits do have natural sugar but adding your own fruit is typically a better option than buying a Greek yogurt with a sugar added topping. Sugar free Greek yogurt would be nice but in today’s world it just isn’t a reality. For most people, a small amount of sugar is no big deal and fortunately there are numerous products on the market for those seeking low sugar yogurts. 

Greek Yogurt vs Frozen Greek Yogurt

To many people, frozen Greek yogurt is much more of a dessert than a healthy snack like Greek yogurt. Frozen Greek yogurt is not simply regular Greek yogurt frozen. If you have have ever tried to freeze Greek yogurt, you probably know that it turns out like a rock and not an ice cream texture. Additionally, it lacks the creamy ice cream taste because it lacks cream as an ingredient.

What about nutrition? We compared Dannon Oikos frozen Greek yogurt to 0% regular Greek yogurt, The serving size was a half cup and both flavors were vanilla.

Greek yogurt is much more nutritious than frozen Greek yogurt, as expected, based on the above numbers. However, frozen Greek yogurt isn’t really that bad for you assuming you stick to the 1/2 cup serving size. In reality, that serving size probably isn’t enough for a lot of people and they may end up eating a cup or more. We only compared vanilla flavor, however, the nutrition facts will obviously change wit different flavors. Proceed with caution before buying any Greek yogurt product if you are worried about nutrition because not all products, brands, or flavors are created equal.

Does Greek Yogurt Spoil?


Greek yogurt is made from milk; therefore, it does spoil. Unopened Greek yogurt or strained yogurt can last two to three weeks beyond the sell by date, assuming it is stored properly at the correct temperature. You should never leave Greek yogurt at room temperature for more time than is necessary because it will spoil quickly.

Any discoloring or mold on Greek yogurt means it is no longer good. Additionally, if the smell seems off, it is best to discard the product. Greek yogurt typically should not smell overly sour or have a yeast smell. A murky, watery layer on the top is natural and can either be stirred back in or dumped off. That watery substance is just the whey that has settled to the top and it actually has nutrients like calcium and probiotics.

You can freeze Greek yogurt for up to two to three months. It is best to freeze it when it has not already been opened to preserve the freshness. Once the product thaws, take a small bite or smell it to check if the yogurt is still good. Greek yogurt may not maintain its original texture after frozen and then thawed. It is to freeze a small amount of Greek yogurt, thaw it, and then determine if you like the texture before buying a cart full.

To sum it up, Greek yogurt does spoil, but it will typically last a couple weeks or more beyond the sell by date. You can freeze Greek yogurt, but the texture may change upon being thawed. Do not eat Greek yogurt that has mold or is a different color from the original color. Any strong yeast or sour smell means it is probably bad. When in doubt, just trash it.  While Greek yogurt can be exspensive, it is better to be conservative about spoilage than risk being seriously ill.
